Super-fast evaluation

Brief description

This exercise can be used to carry out a rapid evaluation that can then form the basis of a dialogue between teachers and students regarding the teaching and what the students get out of it.

Motivation for the exercise and required outcome

The exercise helps the students to voice their opinions about the teaching. 

Performing the exercise

  • Start by telling the students that you want to hear their thoughts about how the teaching works for them.
  • It is important that you explicitly tell them what you want them to evaluate – the form of the teaching, the content or something else?
  • The students are given two post-its each. On one of them they write what they think works well in the teaching. On the other they write what they think could be improved. They have 5 minutes to complete the exercise.
  • Then you collect all the post-its.

Variation options

  • If you use the exercise at the start or in the middle of the semester, it may be a good idea to follow up on the evaluation in class so that the students get the opportunity to explain their post-its. This makes it possible to use the exercise to reach agreement about everyone’s expectations for the rest of the semester.
  • You can expand the exercise with a Delphi exercise, which involves passing the post-its around between the students instead of collecting them. If the students agree with the statement on the post-it, they indicate this with a tally mark. If they disagree, they simply pass the post-in on to the next student.
  • You should take all the post-its home, read them and follow up by discussing the results with all the students.
