Students as producers of educational videos

Short description

The purpose of the course is to strengthen the students’ teaching skills. Participants in the course will become acquainted with theories and principles of good teaching practice and communication, including knowledge of ‘blended learning’. In addition, the course will prepare students to provide feedback and receive criticism in an appropriate way that can promote learning.

Teacher's motivation

In connection with the course for medical students in Educational IT, a need was detected for an activity to prepare for teaching medical subjects in the Bachelor’s degree programme. The activity was intended to take place in the students’ preparation time and to train concepts and textbook material at a lower taxonomic level. The activity was to support dissemination and communication, making the product applicable in the teaching of fellow students.

Description of the activity

With the Explain Everything program, students were instructed to produce an educational video for students at the same level as their own. The subject might be medical, but they were allowed to select other topics too.

  • Initially, the students worked in groups to produce a script with headlines, descriptions of key concepts and the relationships between them, learning objectives and a manuscript.
  • They spent a class session in the course on the start-up phase. Subsequently, they spent about an hour on the production of the video.
  • The videos were uploaded in a blog on Blackboard, so that they could be viewed by everyone.
  • Finally the teacher provided feedback. However, peer feedback may also be used.

Outcome of the activity

When producing their own educational videos, the students took an active part in the structuring of the course material and also reflected on how to communicate this. The videos could be accessed by everyone, which enabled the students to use their own videos as well as those produced by their fellow students for teaching and for revision at a later time.

Worth considering

  • Explain Everything can be downloaded to multiple platforms free of charge, but it can be a challenge if a student does not have one of these platforms. Ask students to download well in advance of the activity. Other video production programs may also be used.
  • The activity may be alien to the students, so it is important to explain which learning objectives are being met.
  • Let students make videos on different topics so that they can use the videos actively later on for exam revision, for instance.
