Internship: Identifying internship host organisation

Brief description

The students’ task is to identify an internship host organisation for their project placement. The activity creates a space for the students to exchange ideas and inspiration among themselves regarding their choice of internship host organisation and the next steps in the process.

The tool must be used at the beginning of the semester so that you as a teacher may best support the students’ efforts to make the initial contact to the company or organisation in question and align their expectations to this.

Motivation for the exercise and required outcome

The purpose of the exercise is to get the students to consider if they are prepared to begin the process of identifying an internship host organisation. The exercise also increases the students’ level of reflection as to how they would like to use their academic competences in a project-oriented context.

Performing the exercise

    • The teacher starts by dividing the room into four imaginary spaces (handout 1). Each space represents a statement regarding the initial process of identifying an internship host organisation.
    • The teacher reads the four statements aloud, and each student then moves to stand in the space that represents the statement they best identify with.
    • The teacher then makes up groups of four students, making sure each group has a student from each of the four spaces.
    • Each student in each group now speaks about their selected statement, elaborating on their thoughts regarding identification of internship host organisation. Then follows a round in which all four students in each group exchange inspiration and ideas – some students may even have concrete networks that the other students can make use of. The individual student in focus for inspiration and exchange of ideas writes down the input they receive (handout 1) (five minutes per student – the teacher is timekeeper)
