Internship: Inspiration sheet for supervision

Brief description

The students must reflect on and formulate their learning outcomes from their project placement by filling in an inspiration sheet before the supervision session. The inspiration sheet contains some concrete questions for reflection which the supervisor will bring up and discuss with their students during the actual supervision.

Motivation for the exercise and required outcome

The purpose of using the inspiration sheet before and during the supervision is that it constitutes a framework for the relevance of the dialogue regarding the student’s academic development and their experience of coherence between the university and their internship host organisation.

When reflecting on the purposes of the internship and providing examples of their learning outcomes, the students have an opportunity to consider if they are working towards their original objectives and to identify the competences they are developing during the internship. They may also become aware of possible topics for their thesis.

Performing the exercise

    • Before the supervision:
      • You as a teacher and supervisor must send inspiration sheets to the students. Bear in mind that the reflection sheets are earmarked for before (handout 1), during (handout 2) and after (handout 3) the internship.
      • The students reflect on and answer the questions in the relevant handout and send it to you.
      • Before the supervision session, you read the students’ answers and write down some points that require special attention and questions from you in the session.
    • During the supervision:
      • Base your supervision on the questions for reflection and the students’ answers of these. Aim for a natural flow in the conversation and do not let yourself be limited by the reflection questions. The sheet should be considered as inspiration for the conversation, and it is important that you listen to the students’ need, which may take a different direction.

    Options:

    • Use handouts 1, 2 and 3 as reflection questions in a group exercise for the students before, during and after their internship. This may supplement or replace a specific focus on these in the supervision. This will enable the students to follow their fellow students’ reflections and progression and use these as their own sounding board through the internship.
    • Use handouts 1, 2 and 3 as elements in the students’ logbooks. The questions may act as good guides for the students’ work with their logbooks as they activate the students’ own reflection.
