Submission of a media product

Brief description

In this activity the students must work in groups to prepare a media product, e.g. a video or audio file, on a course topic as an alternative to a written paper submission or a physical presentation of a topic. The activity trains the students’ academic communication proficiency as well as their creative skills.

Motivation for the activity and required outcome

The students train and challenge their ability to communicate complex academic material. They also have an opportunity to explore and expand their creativity by creating a media product. It may be advantageous to use this activity as part of a course that uses course attendance as its method of evaluation. In this context it may be used as a final presentation in which the students practice their oral academic communication skills. Submission of a media product to replace a number of physical presentations in class will save time for exploring important topics in the course.

Performing the activity

  • You as a teacher must select one or a number of topics for the students to work with.
  • In groups, the students must prepare a media product which explores the set topic. The completed product should preferably last less than ten minutes.
  • The students themselves choose the digital services they wish to use for their product and their communication method.
  • It may take the shape of a video or audio file.
  • Finally, the students submit the product in Brightspace, where you finally give your feedback in writing.

Options:

  • You may record you feedback in a sound file instead of writing it. This will enable you to give more differentiated feedback while saving time. If you are teaching in a language programme, this will also train your students’ listening skills in the language in question.
  • To conclude the activity, you may schedule some time in your teaching for the students to present all the products they created. This will enable the students to gain inspiration from the products of their fellow students. If the products are to be presented, you may consider whether the students should treat different topics so as to have less overlap of products.
  • You may ask the students to exchange feedback on the products - either during sessions or in an online format. Bear in mind that this type of presentation may be intimidating for some students.

Activities

    Examples of Practice

      You will need:

      • Cameras and microphones. The students can use their smartphones for the recordings, or you can give them access to the University's microphones and cameras.

      Worth considering:

      • Is the focus of the course suitable for media product creation by the students?
      • Should the students have the option of submitting their product without the other students being able to see this?
      • Do you want to recommend certain digital services for the activity?
