Collective supervision of large classes

Faculty: BSS. Class: Cand. IT i It, Kommunikation og Organisation (ITKO). Course: Supervision on thesis. Study level: Thesis students. Class size: 17-20 students

Motivation for the activity

Normally, the teacher must answer the same questions numerous times during a thesis semester. The objective of this course is that the students will, to a larger extent, learn from and help each other so that they are not only dependent on the teacher’s answers and assessments.

Description of the activity

  • The teacher plans three joint supervision meetings – one before, one in the middle of, and one at the end of the course.

  • The teacher writes a supervision letter, explaining to the students what they may expect from their teacher during the course.

  • The teacher asks the students to give peer review on each other’s work, possibly in connection with the mid-term seminar.

  • The teacher creates a Facebook page in which the students can receive answers to their questions and read the answers to the questions of their fellow students.

Useful tips

It is important to bear in mind that this course requires a great deal of preparation work by the teacher. It is also important to remember to meta-communicate with the students about the overall idea of the course. Based on experience, many students are reluctant to share their results and tend to consider their fellow students as competitors rather than collaboration partners. This course may help dismiss this idea.
