Dialogue and interaction with 300 students at a lecture.

Short description

Engaging students in large lectures an establishing dialogue can be challenging. Using live online polls through Vevox, (note that AU instructors hold a Mentimeter license), fosters interaction and reveals how well students grasp the subject matter.

Motivation

THE PROCESS

Before class

Before the session, the instructor uploads multiple choice questions to the polling system.
The questions may rely on text and or images. The instructor can also show video clips as a lead in to each question.

In class

In plenary:

  • The instructor presents the questions at a chosen point during the lecture.

  • Students take a few minutes to reflect on each question and e.g. discuss it with their neighbor student.

  • They then access the polling system and submit their answers on a smartphone or laptop.

  • After collecting responses, the instructor may ask a student who selected the correct answer to explain why they chose it.

Læringsmål

  • Engage in dialogue with the many students.

  • Create activity during the lecture.

  • Gain insight into students’ overall understanding of the subject matter.

  • Allow students to receive feedback on their understanding on the subject matter.

Erfaringer

Outcome

  • This approach creates interaction and participation among students similar to small group teaching.

  • Students receive direct feedback on their understanding of the subject matter.

  • The instructor gains immediate insight into students’ understanding of the subject matter.

Advice for other instructors

  • Students’ learning and their evaluation of the activity depend heavily on questions which should feel neither too easy nor too difficult. If questions feel too easy, students may assume the subject itself lacks depth. If questions feel too difficult, students may lose motivation and disengage. Well balanced questions encourage students to respond and take an active role in the lecture. Ideally, some questions should also connect to exam conditions.
