Equal participation in hybrid learning

Short description

Each group is assigned to a digital group room while working on exercises in class. Students participating online can call the teacher into their digital group room if they need help.

Motivation

That all students at AU Herning experience the value of “close interaction with the students” in practice.

Learning objectives

  • All students can participate equally regardless of whether they participate in person, online, synchronously or asynchronously.

  • Students can receive help fast if they experience challenges with the group exercises.

Execution

THE PROCESS

In plenum

Students can participate in the class in person or online as well as synchronously and asynchronously in a hybrid learning space. I go over the content from the student preparation time and clarify any questions or uncertainties.

  • Students participating online should have their cameras on and make sure the sound is good.

  • The lecture is being recorded and is made accessible in Brightspace for the students participating asynchronously.

I groups

Students work in groups on additional exercises related to the course content. I am available to guide and help students if needed.

  • Students participating online work together in a digital group room on Discord. These group rooms are managed by the students.

  • The groups that participate asynchronously outside the teaching sessions can also ask questions in the group room, which I will answer continuously.

  • Groups participating online can write in the group chat if they need help. I access their group room online and help the group with the exercise.

Out of class

Students can contact me during the week with any additional questions they have regarding the exercise.

Reflections

Outcomes

  • Students benefit greatly from being able to contact me in a digital group room, especially those participating online.

  • Students already use Discord a lot, so it is easy to get in touch with them on there

Challenges

  • Equal participation can be hard to achieve, as asynchronous students don’t use the digital group room as actively, but rather use each other for help.

Advice for other educators

  • Offer to meet with the students outside of normal teaching hours, perhaps in the evening, where they can present their results from an exercise and receive feedback from you.
