Optimise your time with students using a flipped classroom format

Short description

Flipped classroom is a teaching format whereby the students go through the session’s academic content at home (out of class) by watching video lectures and demonstrations of relevant programmes (in this case, a statistics programme). Teaching time on campus (in class) is then spent completing exercises and assignments.

Motivation

The course is practical, and I felt that my time with students could be used better if I did more than simply stand and talk. I wanted to make sure that the students really got to know the material.

Learning objectives

  • To use preparation time more constructively.

  • To create more time for exercises and discussion in the classroom.

Execution

THE PROCESS

Before class

The teacher divides up the lectures into smaller units and records them using Panopto. The videos are published in small sections, which the students watch as preparation for the teaching session.

In class

Students are instructed to work on specific exercises based on the academic material whilst the teacher goes round and helps them. Students sit around round tables so that they can also discuss the exercises among themselves.

After class

The videos are available throughout the course, which means the students can watch them as often as they need to and also use them when preparing for their exam.

Reflections

Outcomes

  • On average, the students scored two grade points higher compared with the previous course.

  • Contact to the students improved considerably compared with traditional lectures, and the teacher gained a

Challenges

  • Videos may be reused from one year to the next, but elements will always need to be updated.

Advices for other educators

  • Bear in mind that the workload of the teacher is distributed differently in flipped classroom teaching. Preparation will primarily take place before the course starts and will decrease once the course is in progress.
