Project collaboration with a research centre

Short description

The Projects in Bioinformatics (PiB) course forms a framework for project activities related to projects at the Bioinformatics Research Centre (BiRC). The course is a 5 or 10 ECTS project, it is carried out in consultation with supervisors from BiRC, and is documented in a written report.

Motivation

I would like the students to be able to use a project-oriented work process throughout the project, as this prepares them for their Master's thesis.

Learning objectives

  • To give participants insight into working as a group at Bioinformatics Research Centre (BiRC).

  • To train participants in searching for information independently, in planning and executing projects, in communicating academic problems, and in reading and understanding scientific articles.

  • To describe and apply terminology, methods and results from the subject area in question.

  • To plan and execute a small-scale practical project in a bioinformatics setting.

Execution

THE PROCESS

Registration

The students sign up before the start of the semester. They can choose different versions of the project depending on whether they are participating in the project for the first, second or third time. They can participate in the project either individually or in groups of up to three students.

Choosing a topic

At the beginning of the semester, the students are assigned a supervisor from BiRC and possibly a co-supervisor. They select a topic in collaboration with the supervisor(s). The students are encouraged to find inspiration from courses and projects they have completed on their Master’s degree programme, as well as from the subject areas they find most interesting.

Project contract

After registering for PiB, a project contract must be drawn up in collaboration with the supervisor. The contract describes the project's problem statement, action plan and supervision plan. The project contract must be submitted by no later than 1 September or 1 February, depending on which semester the students participate in.

Project work

Once the project contract has been submitted and approved, it is up to the student or project group to carry out the project in practice under supervision. The project work is completed by submitting a report (10-15 pages for a 5 ECTS project and 20-25 pages for a 10 ECTS project) via the Digital Exams System.

Exam

The exam consists of a 15-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute discussion of the presentation and the report. In addition to the supervisor, an internal examiner (researcher employed at BiRC) is also present at the exam. The exam grade reflects the overall assessment of the report, the presentation and the subsequent defence, in which the written report carries the most weight.

Outcomes

The students appreciate the individual project processes, allowing them to immerse themselves in topics of their own choice and preparing them for their Master’s thesis.
