Redesigning qualitative research and method using hybrid teaching

Short description

The course has been redesigned to increase focus on the use of Brightspace and digital tools, and to strengthen feedback culture, students’ additional learning, and active learning.

Teacher's motivation

Redesigned the entire course with greater focus on using Brightspace and digital tools to create a blended learning process that benefits the feedback culture, students’ additional learning, and active learning.

Description of the activity

Process of the activity

  1. Students start with a welcome video and instructional videos in Brightspace.
  2. Assignments are solved in groups with scheduled time for instructor support.
  3. Students give peer feedback in study groups.
  4. Students receive written feedback on group submissions and oral feedback individually.

Resources for students:

  • Structured course design on Brightspace
  • Instructional videos
  • Voice-over presentations on theoretical topics

Support for students:

  • Structured feedback from teaching instructors
  • Easy access to course materials
  • Instructional videos
  • Theoretical videos

Technology used

  • Brightspace for communication and information
  • Video (various formats) for instruction and student welcome
  • Vimeo, Zoom, Mentimeter, and TaskCard for collaboration and feedback

Outcomes

  • Great benefit from the study activity model and the structure of the in-class and out-of-class activities.
  • Streamlined course design.
  • Shifted from 6 classes of 24 students with many teaching instructors to 2 classes of 70 with 2 teaching instructors and 2 co-instructors.
  • High availability during set time slots.
  • Consistent and clear feedback.

Challenges

  • Synchronous hybrid teaching requires 2 instructors. One teaching instructor and an e-moderator are not enough for several hours of teaching.
  • File management and control of submissions on Brightspace.
  • “Smart” solutions such as writable PDF documents for larger assignments with multiple steps.

Worth considering

  • Choose your tools carefully. They must work efficiently and reliably for 140 students.
  • Quote: “Resources are well spent on feedback, since students ask for it. We tell them when we give feedback, not only written but also oral.” “In relation to exam alignment, we show them (through structured feedback) what we emphasize in the exam.”
