Overview and connection to collaborative concept map

Short description

The purpose of the course is that, in relation to measuring instruments, the students acquire an understanding of essential concepts such as reliability and validity and learn statistical methods of handling these concepts and to assess the quality of a certain measuring instrument on the basis of these concepts.

Teacher's motivation

The purpose of the course is that, in relation to measuring instruments, the students acquire an understanding of essential concepts such as reliability and validity and learn statistical methods of handling these concepts and to assess the quality of a certain measuring instrument on the basis of these concepts.

Description of the activity

Padlet, which is an online interactive tablet, was used as a tool because it enables several individuals to draw links simultaneously between text boxes, thus creating a shared concept map.

  • The exercise took place in class, but the teacher organised the groups in advance and created a Padlet for each group, inserting the first items of a concept map as an example.
  • The teacher facilitated the discussions in the groups during the exercise.
  • The exercise concluded with a joint follow-up session.

Outcome of the activity

The students have said that this is a very helpful exercise for creating an overview and reflection, and that it is useful for exam preparation.

Worth considering

  • The exercise is well suited for courses with a very large number of concepts.
  • It is recommended that the exercise is conducted a couple of times during a course so that the concept map is built up gradually. This will support the students’ overview and reflection during the course.
  • It is an advantage to communicate explicitly to the students that one correct answer to the exercise cannot necessarily be given, and that they can add words to the list of concepts and methods they might have received for inspiration.
