Using interdisciplinary groups

Brief description

The course introduces the students to different aspects of cultural management across culture-political topics and more practical management challenges. We deal with both publicly funded cultural institutions and private companies in the creative sector.

The teacher’s motivation

I haven’t taught such a diverse group before, and I was very curious to see what challenges and opportunities this brought about. Inspired by the course from before the start of the semester, I decided to introduce the diverse classroom to the students during the first class. I wanted to emphasise the unique opportunity they had to learn something new – partly about other fields of study, but also about their own. I think it’s important that the students become aware of this aspect early on, so they realise the value of collaborating with their fellow students.

Description of the activity

  • As an introduction to the course, I held a speech during the first lecture, where I emphasised the importance of respecting different backgrounds – both academic, national and ethnic. I also used the speech to urge the students to get acquainted and to discuss the different topics that the course was going to cover.
  • Afterwards, the students were divided into groups of three, where each student came from a different field of study.
  • They worked with portfolio assignments in the groups during the entire course. The students had a blog for each group, where they wrote the portfolio assignments.
  • For the exam, the students had to compile several portfolio assignment from the course, including:
    • Leadership Declaration (individual)
    • Analysis of institution (group work)
    • Interview with cultural manager (group work)
    • Literature assignment (individual)

Outcome of the activity

It’s hard to say whether it had a great effect, but I think it set the scene for a positive approach to the students’ differences. In the evaluation, the students indicated that it had been a big success and that they had learnt a lot from each other.
