Switching from classroom instruction to online video-based teaching

Short description

The teacher replaced classroom instruction on the Envivo software program with instructional/exercise videos that were available on Brightspace throughout the semester.

Motivation

Previous classes on Envivo often took place in the late afternoon and attendance was relatively low. The teacher wanted to offer a form of instruction that students could access to the extent they needed it and when they needed it.

Learning objectives

  • Releasing resources

  • Making better use of students' and student instructors' time.

  • Creating flexible, effective and accessible teaching

Execution

THE PROCESS

Before class

  • The course is divided into small sequences. The content, learning paths, downloadable material and exercises of each sequence are planned out.

  • This content is used to make short instructional videos that demonstrate how to use Envivo. The teacher produces a number of videos using a screencast program (ed. we recommend Panopto) and posts them on Brightspace at the beginning of the course.

  • The students have access to all teaching material and can access it to the extent they need to and in their own time.

During class

The student instructors are responsible for following up on the online teaching. This involves ensuring that students regularly upload their Envivo projects and giving them feedback on their projects.

Reflections

Outcomes

  • Students can manage their own time, as the videos are available online from the beginning of the course.

  • Instead of teaching a half-empty class, the student instructors can spend their time in a more constructive way and give feedback on the videos uploaded.

  • The videos are available throughout the semester and can also be used to prepare for exams.

Challenges

  • Keep in mind that software programs like Envivo are constantly updated, so it is necessary to maintain the videos at the same rate.

Advices for other educators

  • Screencast programs are easy to work with, even for novice users. Remember to consider the course as a whole – topic, content and exercises.
