"Freewriting" and writing process

Short description

The course

The subject of the European Middle Ages, with a special emphasis on people’s lives and travels, is a cultural-historical subject. We study the period from the fall of the Roman Empire at the end of the 5th century and until the Reformation at the beginning of the 16th century. Great emphasis is on providing the students with training in the technique of writing assignments and insight into both different historical interpretations and long-term historical development lines.

Teacher's motivation

The motivation for developing the activity is that the teaching of this subject will support the students in the process of writing a take-home assignment on a topic of their own choice. The learning objective of the activity is that the students embark on the academic writing process and gain an insight into the different phases of the writing process. The activity may be used in the different phases of assignment writing and for the selection of an assignment topic.

Description of the activity

First part:

  • In pairs and based on the teaching plan, the students must discuss what they are considering or would like to write about.
  • They are then asked to explain to the class what their “partner” will work with. The purpose of this introductory exercise is to encourage the students to decide on a topic as early as possible, so as to allow them more time for the actual writing process.
  • The teacher must hand out the exercise “free writing”, in which the students will work with the questions: what should be investigated and why? The students write for ten minutes and subsequently discuss in pairs the effect of the exercise on their work.

Second part:

  • A month later, all students must have chosen their topic. The exercise is repeated with a special emphasis on the questions:
    • How can I study the topic
    • And how can I plan my studies?
  • This part of the exercise forms the basis of discussion with the supervisor about the assignment.

Third part:

  • The final part of the exercise is supported by teaching in assignment writing based on handout 1 and The good paper [Den gode opgave].
  • The students are given the handout and are instructed to use this throughout the assignment writing process.
  • The exercise is completed by the submission by all students of a synopsis in Blackboard.
  • Finally, the teacher organises a workshop with feedback from opponents and the teacher and a general discussion in class about assignment writing.

Outcome of the activity

Most students began the process of selecting a topic and preparing a draft for their assignment before the end of the course. This provided a possibility for more feedback and supervision.

Worth considering

  • I would try to use handout 1 about the writing process more actively and with a focus on the final part of the writing process.
  • I would recommend that the teacher provides more feedback on the students’ drafts of some paragraphs or parts of their assignment.
