Thesis supervision in large classes

Brief description:

The supervisor implements four specific initiatives to lighten the burden of supervision in large classes and increase the outcome for students.

Motivation

To create a framework for thesis supervision that allows more time for concrete and specific supervision of students’ master’s theses.

Learning objectives

To create a framework for thesis supervision that allows more time for concrete and specific supervision of students’ master’s theses.

Execution

The supervisor implements four initiatives in the supervision of 17-20 students.

THE PROCESS

1. Class supervision

Some information is relevant to all students. Instead of saying the same things to 20 students individually, they can be said once in a class supervision session. This benefits the supervisor and gives students an opportunity to meet each other and talk about their considerations and research questions.

2. Supervision letter

The supervisor writes a letter to manage student expectations: What does the supervisor prioritise when working with students and in regards to the written product? How does the supervisor wish to supervise, what expectations do they have of their students, and what can the students expect (and not expect) from the supervisor?

3. Peer review

The students are actively involved in the process by reviewing each others’ work. This teaches them to reflect on their own work and the work of others.

4. Online discussion forum

An online discussion forum in Brightspace is created and shared with the students. This allows students to ask general questions (e.g. about the structure of a table of contents) and the supervisor answers the questions on an ongoing basis. Everyone can benefit from the answers given by the supervisor in an online discussion forum. The supervisor can also use the forum for future reference.

Reflections

Outcomes

  • Class supervision is an opportunity for Master’s students to draw on each other and each other’s experiences for support.

Challenges

  • The supervisor needs to convince the students that it is beneficial to share their thoughts and experiences with others.

Advice for other teachers

  • The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the students are aware of the value of class supervision.
